R&D manager - Academy at Odense Technical College

I'm often confronted with the question: What do you actually do? – and instead of putting the question aside with an ironic remark "That I really don't know myself" (witch could just as well happen) - I always invite to a small narrative on how last Thursday looked like.

7.00 I'm not an early bird. My wife (she is a very early bird) wakes me up with a cup of instant branded coffee. I turn on the telly to snap the news – primarily sports – soccer to be precise. Coffee is downstairs – always with a toast heavy on Nutella (Nur wenn nutella daran steht ist auch Nutella d'rin). Bath – competing with my youngest son to be first. Shaving. 3 blade Gillette – foam.

8.00 I tend to be precise – no reason to really. Prepare for first meeting on "Virtual Partnerships" EU-sponsored – at least partly. A project that deals with knowledge management in industrial clusters – XML-structures, SME's, virtual organisations...(my job leaves me talking in metatags). UPS. Forgot to order bread and coffee at the cantina. I have to go to the baker myself.

8.30 Meeting starts –I realise I'm not a great leader of meetings – well that's not relevant – I'm among professionals – they know how to set up the project...

10.00 Meeting ends – sum up. I write the meeting minutes – have to, or I forget. I work out a plan of who at the college I have to inform....

11.00 Course design. Course for unemployed engineers in robotics in connection with the foundation RoboCluster . Do a lot of googeling. Writing a draft that can be send out as a consensus paper for the teachers and institutions involved. Not that I know much about robotics – but I do know a great deal on learning and curriculum design.

12.00 Lunch with a colleague – discuss EU-InteregIIIC proposal on regional development, next subject: soccer, Third subject Monty Python , fourth subject of the lunch conversation: food

12.43 Presentation on "The Personal Portfolio Concept as part of the organisational Human Resource strategy" for a group of managers that attend a course at the college. Why this pompeous topic? Well, it is crucial to see personal development as a personal responsibility and in the organisation I think the public portfolio can reflect this responsibility....

14.00 The presentation was not all that successful – I did not manage to illustrate the impact of portfolio management... maybe next time!

Well, I have a presentation at 3 pm for managers in the public administration on retraining of technical draftsmen. The idea is to prepare this specific group of people for the digital administration...Or maybe even be aware of what impact the concept will have on the jobs they are performing. I have to set up the projector, check that the computer is on-line, that my password still works, that the chairs are set right....

15.00 Meeting starts.

17.30 A nice meeting. I think we agreed that we have to be specific in terms of technology, communicational and social input if we are going to propose this flexible learning issue to this group of people......

18.00 I look at fish - talking with the shop clerk on how to cook a catfish, what wine should go with it. I buy. Take my bike home. Cook while talking to my wife, reflecting the day. Eat – love cheese – smelly, goat – on bread.

19.03 Dinner is ready. My youngest complains about fish – again...and goes on with a long reflection that Doumbledore is merly a Freudian projection.....Well!

21.00 A game of Squash...or was it Sopranos don't recall.

Now that I am off to bed where does this leaves me.... or you for that matter. Well dip into my portfolio. "The profiles" is an exploration on the jobs I do – and why I do them the way I do them. Under "Material" you will find a brief description of the projects that I work on at the moment....
